Medicaid Extends Postpartum Coverage to 12 Months

Published on May 25, 2023 by Michelle Berney

Starting from March 1, 2023, pregnant individuals in NYS will receive 12 months of continuous Medicaid coverage after giving birth, regardless of any increase in their household income during that period.

Previously, pregnant individuals were only eligible for Medicaid for 60 days postpartum. This 12-month coverage will be applicable to anyone who was eligible for and enrolled in Medicaid at any point during their pregnancy. The coverage will begin on the last day of pregnancy and end on the last day of the 12th month after the pregnancy. After these 12 months, individuals will need to go through a renewal process. If they are no longer eligible for Medicaid, they may qualify for the Family Planning Benefit Program (FPBP) or the Family Planning Extension Coverage (FPEC).
